research to social awarness

Pot, weed, ganja, chronic, budda, mary jane, purple haze, cheeba, grass-- these are all terms used to identify marijuana.   A 2003 study by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports 40% of Americans age 12 and over have used marijuana at least once making it the most commonly used illegal drug. Marijuana is a Hallucinogenic that takes on the characteristics of a depressant with long term use.  It has been used for thousands of years.  Traces of THC (the active ingredient) have been found in Egyptian mummies dating back 3000 years ago.  The first written records of medicinal use of marijuana date back to China 28BC. The marijuana plant continues to be used today for creating hemp products such as rope and jewelry.  It is also used medicinally in the form of Merinol.  And, of course, it is smoked "recreationally" by many people worldwide.  So, what's so bad about weed anyway?

Why Do People Smoke It?

There are many reasons people report using marijuana. Some report that it helps them relax or fall asleep. Others, state that they are more creative under the influence of the drug. Marijuana is often identified as a social drug and is often smoked in groups. Some people report that smoking gives them something to do so they aren't bored. Others identify smoking marijuana to help with anger managment, depression, or feelings of anxiety. "It helps me calm down, relax." Marijuana is often a drug of choice for pain managment as well. It is great for increasing the appetite and also helps to decrease feelings of nausea. As stated earlier it has been used medicinally for thousands of years.

Marijuana And The Brain

Marijuana is unlike other drugs because it is not a single molecule but rather a complex molecule with over 400 cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the chemicals which give marijuana it's ability to make the user feel high. THC ( delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main active ingredient in the marijuana plant. THC is a cannabinoid.

A chemical called Anandamide is a natural cannabinoid receptor in the brain. THC mimics the actions of anandamide, so THC binds with cannabinoid receptors making the brain think it is naturally producing anadamide. It tricks the brain! Long term use of marijuana can clog the pathways that chemicals cross (synapses) and slows/stops production of "feel good" chemicals that the brain natuarally produces.
Why is this a problem? Below are a list of areas of the brain that have cannabinoid receptors and are effected by marijuana use.

-Cannabinoid receptors are abundant in:
Cerebellum--------------------------body movement/coordination
Hippocampus------------------------learning/memory
Cerebral Cortex (especially cingulate, frontal, parietal regions)------higher cognitive functions
Nucleus accumbens-----------------------reward center
Basal Ganglia-------------------------------(unconscious) movement control
-Cannabinoid receptors are moderate in:
Hypothalamus------------body housekeeping functions (body temp, salt, water, sugar)
Amygdala--------------emotional response/fear/fight or flight
Spinal Cord----------Peripheral sensation/pain
Brain Stem-----------sleep and arousal, motor control
Central Gray---------analgesia/pain control
Nucleus of solitary tract--------visceral sensation, nausea/vomiting

Marijuana's Effect on the Rest of the Body

Marijuana increases heart rate by about 50%. Frequent use can lead to the possibility of damage to the heart such as heart murmurs, heart attack, and stroke. People with high blood pressure or other heart problems are obviously at higher risk than a healthy person.

Marijuana also causes irritation to the lungs. The fact that inhaled marijuana smoke is held in the lungs for as long as possible makes it even more irritating to lungs than tobacco smoke. There is also speculation that marijuana could lead to lung cancer due to the cancer causing chemical found in it.

Marijuana also has an effect on hormone levels. This can lead to problems reproductin for both men and woman. There is also speculation that use of marijuana during adolescents is more dangers than use in adulthood due to the hormonal changes that are naturally occuring during this time.

One widely recognized effect of marijuana is "the munchies." This occurs due to the cannabinoids in the brain's hypothalumus triggering a false hunger response. People who smoke marijuana tend to eat junk food when they have the munchies, and are therefore, at risk for health problems related to unhealthy eating habits such as obesity and high cholesterol.

Overall, there is a lot of speculation about the possible effects of marijuana on the body. There is more to learn about this topic. The person choosing to use the drug needs to be informed of the possible effects of use an then make a decision about the risk he or she is willing to take.

Don't Think Marijuana Is A Problem? Then Why Are You Still Reading This!?

I receive many comments from people who curse at me, laugh, or are otherwise rude and obnoxious (and often just stupid). If you didn't wonder about the dangerous of this drug, why would you have continued reading beyond the first paragraph? This lens was created for people who would like some information about the possible negative effects of marijuana. In fact, there is nothing in this lens that has not been proven medically (do some research). Rather than waste my time with your denial, ask yourself why you are taking the time to write a ridiculous response to this lens. If you don't believe marijuana could be bad for you, keep smoking it. Don't bother writing to tell me that you are going to keep smoking. I really don't care.

I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now
[Bridge]

and lets pretend like they called me the greatest selling out arenas with big ass stages
and everybody loved me and no-one ever hated
lets try to use imagination
[Chorus]
[B.o.B - Verse 2]
Okay lets pretend like this never happened (never)
like I never had dreams of being a rapper (rapper)
like I didn’t write raps up in all of my classes
like I never used to run away into the blackness
now lets pretend like it was all good (good) like i didn’t live staring in a notebook (notebook)
like I did the things that i probably knew i should (should)

allright lets pretend Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen
lets pretend things would have been no different
pretend he procrastinated had no motivation
pretend he just made excuses that were so paper thin they could blow away with the wind
marshall you’re never gonna make it makes no sense to play the game there ain’t no way that you’ll win
pretend he just stayed outside all day and played with his friends
pretend he even had a friend to say was his friend
and it wasn’t time to move and schools were changing again
he wasn’t socially awkward and just strange as a kid
he had a father and his mother wasn’t crazy as sh-t
and he never dreamed he could rip stadiums and just lazy as sh-t
f-ck a talent show in a gymnasium bitch you won’t amount to sh-t quit daydreaming kid
you need to get your cranium checked you thinking like an alien it just ain’t realistic
now pretend they ain’t just make him angry with this sh-t and there was no one he could even aim when he’s pissed it
and his alarm went off to wake him off but he didn’t make it to the rap Olympics slept through his plane and he missed it
he’s gon’ have a hard time explaining to Hailey and Laney these food stamps and this WIC sh-t
cuz he never risked shit he hopes and he wished it but it didn’t fall in his lap so he ain’t even here
he pretends that…

Entry #7

After research my thoughts about freak the mighty
Stayed the same based on what I got from the internet. “Just one word can describe this book, and that is “awesome”. I read this book recently, and I really loved the plot of this book. It is all about true friendship between two completely different boys. One boy is suffering from a bad disease, and he has very little time to live, and other one is a big boy, who is weak in study, and everything. So, the movie shows that one day both of them met, and they become good friends, and the boy who was suffering found that his friend would help him to do the things, which he would probably not going to do with his own, so he made him his legs, and he started to explore the world, and while doing this he also helping his friend to be a good person in life, and he is also grooming him to be a better person in life, and surprisingly he was listening to Kieran, and he was changing inside. One day Kieran got died because of his chronicle disease. So the big boy became very sad, but because of Kieran he became a good person now, and he wrote a book about his life, and the story ends. Trust me friends if you read this movie you will cry like I did, it was so wonderful, especially the performance of Kieran was really impressive. This movie got two Golden globes, so you can see that it is a great movie to watch, I really enjoyed reading this book, and it is the best movie of true friendship.”
This quote came from an elder person. Based on my research it makes me appreciate how the author stresses on friendship.
Also how important it is to have a friend.

Balance

Entry #6
Title: Freak the Mighty
Author: Rodman Philbrick

The book that I’m reading is obviously Freak the Mighty. (Says it up there near title) The reason why I choose to read this book besides the fact I had to read a book for the summer; was because I like the creative balance of the characters. The main and important characters are Maxwell and Freak. Maxwell is big and dumb, and most importantly scared of everything. While Freak is small and also smart, in Freak the Might Freak doesn’t really show fear. Despite the balance of the two characters each one of them learns something new from each other. Like freak teaches Maxwell how to use a dictionary and teaching him his right from left. And Maxwell teaching Freak sometimes its okay to walk away. Despite the differences of both characters they all learned at the end life is boring without about taking risks.

Charlotte's Web

Entry #5: Big idea
September 29, 2010
In Mob , there were many themes and big ideas. The first big idea I came across was that life goes around quick, so you got to live it up to the fullest. The second theme of Charlotte’s Web, was that out of bad things comes good things. The last and most important big idea I got from Charlotte’s Web, was that everyone needs a friend.
I say live life to the fullest because life runs by your eyes so quick you never knew it was coming. An example of that is simply Wilbur. Wilbur was born on page one, first he was treated as a new born baby, drank milk from a bottle and pushed around in a baby carriage. Within a short period of time he became bigger, he chose to lie around, and not do much of his life. Because he never realized when you die there’s no coming back no second chance.
Out of bad things come good things. In relation to Charlotte’s Web in order for something good happening to Wilbur something bad had to happen first. An example of this was when Wilbur got shipped to Ferns uncle, which is safe to say  was pretty bad, because Wilbur was going to be farther away from Fern. In a result to this Wilbur finds a friend named Charlotte, which he is able to talk to and learn from.
Last everyone needs a friend. According to Charlottes Web if it wasn’t for the single fact that Wilbur had Charlotte has a friend he would be no different from bacon or pork chops on the Zuckerman’s plate. Despite the hard thinking and gaps in the rode charlotte never gave up, even when hope was forgotten she never lost sight. Charlotte was a true friend.
Reading Charlotte’s web made me think besides the big ideas and themes. It asked me a question if it was really right to kill animals? There very much like us, they eat, they sleep, and they live.
